Amazon to add 2.7GW of capacity to renewable energy portfolio

E-commerce giant Amazon has decided to expand its renewable energy portfolio by adding 2.7GW of capacity across 71 new renewable projects worldwide.

The announcement is part of the company’s efforts to power its entire business with green electricity by 2025.

Amazon has announced investments in its first three solar projects in India, which will have a combined capacity of 420MW.

Located in Rajasthan, the projects will increase the company’s renewable portfolio in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region to 57 projects.

In Europe, Amazon has announced its first rooftop solar projects in France and Austria, as well as its first solar farm in Poland.

The e-commerce firm currently has 117 renewable energy projects across the entire continent.

Amazon is also planning to add an additional 1GW of clean energy capacity across the South-Eastern US.

In South America, the company has announced a 122MW solar farm as its first clean energy project in Brazil.

Once completed, Amazon’s global renewable energy portfolio will have the capacity to generate 50,000GWh of clean energy, which is equivalent to the power consumed by 4.6 million US citizens a year.

Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky said: “We are bringing new wind and solar projects online to power our offices, fulfillment centres, data centres, and stores, which collectively serve millions of customers globally, and we are on a path to reach 100% renewable energy across our entire business by 2025.

“Around the world, countries are looking to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy, and continued investments like ours can help accelerate their journey as we all work together to mitigate the impacts of climate change.”

Claiming to be the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, Amazon has a portfolio of 379 renewable energy projects worldwide.

Earlier this year, AES Corporation signed two power purchase agreements with the retailer to supply 450MW of renewable energy for Amazon’s data centre operations in California.
